Colin & Caroline Healy are famed Richmond singer-songwriters who create incredible original songs and acoustic covers. They have played across town and beyond, being added to highly successful curated playlists and even partnering with Netflix on the ‘13 Reasons Why’ soundtrack. These musicians have achieved tremendous success and share their story, experiences, and views on the music industry. The two tell the story of the moment they were asked to be a part of the Netflix show ‘13 Reasons Why’ soundtrack, with their song ultimately being featured in the introduction sequence. The two discuss what goes into their cover work; from the type of songs they deconstruct to the strategy behind curated playlist placement. They also talk about music video production as well as their experiences playing in and around Richmond while starting a family.
Colin & Caroline go on to play an unreleased original song called ‘Cigarettes,’ where they express feelings of “nostalgia” for “summer nights.”
Rejoining the discussion, Colin & Caroline outline future plans like crafting an EP from new singles. They will continue to develop video production methods and make use of their new home studio all while raising their child with music as an important part of their family. We’re so lucky to have such inspiring guests on the show, and we’re sure to see more successful projects from them in the future.

Please welcome Tyler Meacham to Season 2 of the Small Venue Music podcast! Tyler is an incredible singer-songwriter who has contributed so much to the music scene here in Richmond, Virginia. Her new single, “dream house,” is an emotional piece that reflects feelings of loss, grief, and personal inspiration. This is an amazing episode, with conversations and performances recorded at Crazy Rooster Brewing Company in Powhatan.
Tyler starts by playing her new single “dream house” live. She then joins host Don Busick and the two discuss everything that went into the creation of her song. Tyler talks about production and promotion efforts, filming her music video while on a trip to Asheville, North Carolina, and outlines what success looks like for her music. She also comments on the state of the music industry, and how challenging the landscape can be for many artists to navigate.
Tyler goes on to play two more of her songs. “Better Than I Used To Be” comes from her 2022 album “Into the Fray.” Tyler also plays “Denver,” a track that was released in 2019.
Tyler rejoins the conversation and discusses how she came to be a professional musician. She talks about getting her dream job at Disney, but feeling boxed in by a life that was outlined for her. She found that creating music was the best way to both express herself and try something new every day. Through ups and downs, Tyler talks about the many different hats she wears.
Lastly, Tyler shares her thoughts on the Richmond music scene. She wants to increase cooperation and support between musicians, especially with other female artists. Tyler notes that too often it feels like there’s not enough room for her and her peers to share the spotlight, and that this sense of competition limits the growth of such a wonderful community.

One of Richmond’s Best Singer/Songwriters, Mackenzie Roark, joins the show to discuss her latest album, Rollin’ High, Feelin’ Low, as well as her music journey, influences, and future plans..
Coming back to Richmond fresh off her first headlining role as a band leader, Mackenzie recounts performing at the Bristol Rhythm & Roots festival in Bristol, TN-VA, the “birthplace of country music.”
Mackenzie’s new album, “Rollin’ High, Feelin’ Low” is a culmination of works that describe her own experiences with love and loss in relationships.. The lyrics resonate on a personal level, speaking to the challenges in our lives that make us who we are. Mackenzie recounts the production process of her album, and how she appreciates the collaboration between musicians and her producer, Trey Burnart Hall.
Later in the episode, Mackenzie plays two amazing acoustic versions of songs from her latest album: “Little Pills” and “Sweet Thing.”
Rejoining the discussion, Mackenzie describes how she has always been comfortable playing solo shows in smaller venues. They talk about the logistical and financial needs required to play as a full band in larger venues. Mackenzie shares a bit about the formation and members of her band (The Hot Pants). Looking forward, Mackenzie describes her goals to open for a band touring the United States, setting up a small tour in Europe, and working on a follow up album.
Toward the end of the episode, Mackenzie describes her musical journey. After picking up a guitar in the fifth grade, she found confidence in her singing abilities through her youth worship band. Having started to write songs as an undergrad student at James Madison University, Mackenzie traveled to Ireland for her Masters degree. While in a creative writing program, she worked with author Joseph O’Connor, brother of the late Sinéad O’Connor, to craft a thesis composed of twelve original songs.
Lastly, Mackenzie looks forward to playing at the same venue in Harrisonburg, VA she once frequented as an audience member, and discusses upcoming shows.

Look what the cat dragged in! Richie Reckless and P.V. Trïxxx from Tëaze will be shredding, screaming, rocking, and yes, educating us all on their hair metal ways on Small Venue Music.
To give you a taste of how Tëaze describes their band, here is an excerpt from their social pages.
“A Tëaze show is a glimpse back in time, an authentic tribute to rocks most outrageous era. Playing the greatest party anthems from Bon Jovi to Van Halen, with stage moves Poison wouldn’t dare attempt. If you long for the days when the grass was green, the girls were pretty, and so were the guys, let Tëaze pour their sugar on you.”
Tëaze records an incredible new version of the Small Venue Music theme song to introduce the band on the show. It’s fun, rockin’ and demonstrates the band's creativity and sense of humor.
Richie starts off the show by describing the origins of the band and how they came up with the concept of an “all in” hair metal band. Patrick & Richie discuss the commitment the band made to getting all the details right to bring that era of rock to life. They both describe how you can’t go “halfway” when it comes to hair metal. The guys talk about the bands they love that influenced them and what they love playing live.
Don asks several questions about Tëaze’s stage show. The guys describe how they love interacting with the crowd for photos, the fun and dangers associated with stage jumps, and how they share lead vocals among the members of the band. Don asks a series of questions from superfans of the band.
The show transitions to a live acoustic performance by Richie and Patrick of a new original song, “Light the Way”. They put on an amazing high energy rendition of the song that everyone will want to hear.
After the performance, the guys “unmask” and Richie and Patrick return to the show. The guys talk about how they got their start in music, the roles each band member plays off stage to bring their show to life, and all the supporting members of the band that help make shows possible.
The show closes with the guys sharing some future aspirations they have for the band. They end with Don, Richie, and Patrick sharing shots of whisky to celebrate a fun, amazing show!
